about

Brand new remix of 2006's shimmy-worthy "Snake Star Song" with new beats and more spice, set free for FREE in honor of S. J.'s Facebook page reaching 10,000 Likes!

"Snake Star Song" in its original form was released as part of S. J.'s storytelling album, For the Girl in the Garden (2006)- the official companion album to Catherynne M. Valente's novel, The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden. Sooj is thrilled to revisit this gorgeous piece and take her out for a mani/pedi. The voice of the song is Zmeya, a serpent goddess of Valente's imaginings who's not to be trifled with. In Zmeya's story, she weds a foolish tyrant who destroys her shrine and believes Zmeya herself to be no more than a beautiful woman. He soon comes to regret this estimation. "Don't underestimate a goddess when her heart is in your fangs."

This remix is dedicated to S. J.'s Facebook fans, and also to the spirit of beauty in diversity- may we all come to know our personal beauty and power, however unconventional or intense it may be.

lyrics

There is no black and white to beauty.
The green sneaks in as often as you look.
The blue is in the ocean. The gold is in my eyes,
locked in a gaze. Did you notice
you were on my hook?
I wonder not, for here we are:
little vipers sing the Snake Star Song
in hisses and kisses.
Double check what you're messing with,
my prince.

Keep away, or I will burn your evil army down.
This night is mine, and you are not allowed.
Open my door; do not complain
At the coils of your rude awakening!
Wonder not, for here we are:
little vipers sing the Snake Star Song
in hisses and kisses.
Don't think you know everything,
my king.

Come into my temple
and you shall not leave unchanged.
Don't underestimate a goddess
when her heart is in your fangs.
Come into my temple
and you shall not leave unchanged.
Don't underestimate the serpent
when your heart is in her fangs, no!

I have warned my beloveds of my death to come.
I have seen your face and I know you.
It isn't your tale and your power 'twill spread
but the story of how I destroy you!
There is no black and white to beauty.
There is no black and white to beauty.
No, there is no black and white.
There is green and blue and gold and starlight.

Here we are: little vipers sing the Snake Star Song
in hisses and kisses.
Don't think you know everything,
my king!
